Its mandate included acquiring distressed loans, maximising asset recovery, and facilitating economic development. In the years since, NAMA has played a vital role in supporting economic recovery, managing and recovering billions of Euro in distressed loans, facilitated the delivery of housing at significant scale. NAMA has also made a major and long-lasting contribution to the regeneration of the Dublin Docklands.<\/p>\n<p>The Loan Balance Application (LBA) is a core business system built bespoke to NAMA\u2019s needs and central to NAMA\u2019s operating model.<\/p>\n<p>This case study outlines how NAMA, with the support of the Version 1 team, utilised Generative AI to document the code resulting in detail technical documentation.<\/p>\n<h2>Decipher by Version 1<\/h2>\n<p>To support the requirement to document the LBA, our team deployed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.version1.com\/application-modernisation-integration\/ai-powered-code-analysis-and-documentation-decipher\/\">Decipher<\/a> which is our proprietary Generative AI-powered platform for code analytics and automated documentation.<\/p>\n<p>Decipher performs code analytics to create deep codebase insights and understanding which is populated on a proprietary knowledge graph. This graph enables Decipher to automatically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify individual business processes from your codebase<\/li>\n<li>Group related processes to automatically identify business domains<\/li>\n<li>Provide code insights such as areas of greatest complexity or entanglement and obsolete code<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Generative AI is then combined with this rich knowledge graph to auto generate extensive documentation across the identified files, processes and domains, with insightful architecture diagrams enabling NAMA to quickly assess and understand the source code.<\/p>\n<h2>Outcome and benefits<\/h2>\n<p>Our collaboration with NAMA produced comprehensive documentation through a feedback-driven cycle: NAMA experts reviewed each iteration; we refined the content and progressively validated its accuracy. This hands-on involvement ensured NAMA shaped the final outputs whilst building trust in the results.<\/p>\n<h3>This approach drove many benefits including:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Automated Approach<\/strong> \u2013 Over 9 weeks saved compared to a manual approach<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accelerated Knowledge Transfer<\/strong> \u2013 Comprehensive documentation enabled faster onboarding of new team members<\/li>\n<li><strong>Future Modernisation Ready<\/strong> \u2013 Clear architectural insights support future refactoring or upgrades<\/li>\n<li><strong>Comprehensive Documentation<\/strong> \u2013 High-Level Design Documentation provided per file, process and domain<\/li>\n<li><strong>Architectural Diagrams<\/strong> \u2013 Control Flow, Graph, Sequence Diagrams and C4 Architecture Diagrams supported the onboarding process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cVersion 1\u2019s Decipher tool provided a more automated approach to the documentation of one of our key systems.
