The innovation imperative: AI, data and the modern classroom<\/h2>\n \n
\n

Student and staff expectations regarding digital capability are rising sharply. Jisc’s 2024-25 student survey found that 34% of students use AI<\/a> tools as part of their learning, a figure that has grown rapidly year-on-year.<\/p>\n

In Ireland, the Higher Education Authority<\/a> published a national Policy Framework on Generative AI in Teaching and Learning in December 2025, reflecting the sector’s acknowledgement that AI is no longer a future consideration but a present operational and educational reality.<\/p>\n

Yet adoption among educators remains tentative: AI can provide immediate answers, but learning requires struggle and discovery. If students ask an AI tool instead of grappling with a problem, and the deep thinking that requires, have they learned anything? The result is widespread uncertainty about how to integrate AI responsibly. Some institutions have moved forward with AI-enabled learning tools and analytics; many more are stuck in deliberation, waiting for clearer guidance or proven approaches.<\/p>\n

The hurdle for institutions is not ambition. Most academic and professional services leaders understand the strategic potential of AI-enabled personalised learning, predictive student analytics, automated administration, and data-driven curriculum design.<\/p>\n

The challenge is twofold: confidence and bandwidth. When educators lack frameworks to distinguish between AI tools that support learning and those that merely short-circuit it, deployment stalls. And when IT teams are consumed by incident management and legacy system maintenance, there is no capacity to design and pilot AI integration thoughtfully.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n

Sustainability has moved from a reputational consideration to a regulatory and procurement imperative. In the UK, the Government’s Social Value Model<\/a> requires public sector institutions to demonstrate measurable environmental commitments in procurement activity.<\/p>\n

In Ireland, the Office of Government Procurement’s Green Public Procurement guidance<\/a> and the incoming EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, effective from 2027, are raising the bar for environmental transparency and traceability.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

For higher and further education institutions, which operate significant cloud and digital infrastructure footprints, this creates both a compliance obligation and an opportunity to demonstrate institutional leadership. Managed services transfer IT operational responsibility to a specialist provider. This is a partnership where both succeed when systems run reliably, costs are predictable and the institution redirects resources towards teaching and research.<\/p>\n
