We hosted the AI Engineering Lab hackathon alongside Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. 150 government engineers from 40 cross-government teams came together to prove what’s possible when they are given the space, tools and a real problem to solve.
They tackled real challenges submitted by caseworkers, team leads, and applicants across the public sector. And with Anthropic in the room, with other AI providers, the support and expertise on hand was exceptional.
As Bharath Vadhoola put it on the day: this is people-centred transformation. The UK public sector stands to gain significantly from digitising public services, and the engineers in that room are the ones who will make it happen.
The pace was phenomenal. Teams went from early concept to working demo in a matter of hours. The collaboration across departments, small agencies within departments working alongside some of the largest central government teams, is rarely seen in a structured, productive setting.
And as Phillie Wright at Anthropic noted: these models are the worst they’ll ever be. The imagination shown by the people in that room instilled enormous confidence in what government engineers will be able to create.
